In your approach, are you focused on being comparative or are you fostering your originality?
Conventional career management has us continually develop and refine our skills and abilities as capabilities and then look for who needs them now. We then sell ourselves based on these skills and abilities along with our proven experiences to find fit. Typically these skills and abilities are held to some external standard that becomes the basis of comparison with others. The wild card in this approach is whether or not we are actually inspired by the work we commit to, as our goal is typically focused on our credentials in order to compete and land the next job.
Conventional career management is an “outside-in game”, where we judge our success based on the achievements of our associated skills and abilities, and use these successes as our primary basis of competition. Because our focus is on meeting these external standards, our originality and innate creativity typically take a backseat.
Self-empowered career leadership has us look at our life as chapters, based on a fundamental cause for which we are always looking to evolve and bring into expression. This cause is what we are fundamentally about, the source of our creative energy, and what we have a deep conviction and commitment to pursue as we just know it creates a better future.
Like layers of an onion, we are continually delving into deeper layers of understanding of our cause through our inspired curiosity. This curiosity energizes our innate creativity and has us pursue new capabilities based on new areas of personal growth. Through this approach, our newfound skills and abilities enable new expressions of our originality where we feel heightened levels of joy, pride and fulfillment in the valuable impact we are having.
By continually embracing our curiosity we are forever sparking our creative energy that guides our next expression. This next expression is our next chapter that has us stay at the relevant forefront of the evolving innovations we are creating.
Self-empowered career leadership is an “inside-out game” where we uncover our fundamental cause and trust our curiosity to energize our creativity and engage with the right communities to realize new expressions and have a profound and valuable impact.
The choice of self-empowered career leadership requires a person to shift: from, an outside-in game where they look for others to value their capabilities and experiences; to, an inside-out game where they connect their cause to something much bigger and create a continual stream of inspiring and meaningful work.
To shift to self-empowered career leadership a person needs to take the first step and create the space to do their personal work by defining who they are and what they are fundamentally about. These are the critical foundations they will use to continually guide each chapter of their inside-out life and career journey.
